town was the hottest place in the country on Friday along with Nandyal (Rayalaseema) in Andhra Pradesh with both recording 44.6°C. The

IMD

also issued

heatwave

to severe heatwave alert for all 30 districts across the state for next three to four days.

For Saturday, red warning was issued for 11 districts — Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Nuapada and Angul.

Besides, separate heatwave orange and yellow warning was issued for rest 17 and two districts respectively for Saturday.

Boudh in the state recorded next highest 44.5°C while mercury stood at 44°C in Nuapada and Balangir. An IMD bulletin said 32 places in the state saw mercury hovering at 40°C and above during the day. Of them 12 places saw 43°C or above. Baripada at 43.8°C saw highest 6.3°C above normal during the day in the state. Bhubaneswar at 40.5°C was 2.7°C above normal.

IMD further forecast that prevailing day

temperature

would see a rise by another 2°C to 3°C during the next two days. Manorama Mohanty, head of regional IMD centre, said inflow of dry westerly or northwesterly dry wind and high solar insolation has perpetuated the heatwave.

The govt issued fresh alert to all district collectors to remain prepared to face any eventuality, official report said. Former director of regional IMD centre Sarat Chandra Sahu said, "The prolonged heatwave is a freak event for
