The US and Japan are set to agree on their closest security pact in more than 60 years as both countries grow wary of China's expansionist ambitions.

President Biden, 81, said he wanted to tilt the focus of US foreign policy towards the Asia-Pacific region when he took office in 2021.

Details of the newly strengthened alliance between Washington and Tokyo are likely to be unveiled when Japan's prime minister, Fumio Kishida, visits the US capital on April 10.

They are set to include plans to restructure the US military command in Japan, according to the Financial Times, increase the amount of joint operational planning, as well as more military exercises between the two allies.

The move comes as Japan has rapidly increased defence spending
