Mumbai: The Christian fasting season of Lent comes to a close with the ongoing

Holy Week

that began Palm Sunday.

Churches

are preparing for

Maundy Thursday

and Good Friday rituals and processions Mar 28-29. Easter Sunday falls Mar 31.

Fr Nigel Barrett, spokesperson for the archdiocese of Bombay, said, "Maundy Thursday is when we celebrate the institution of both the priesthood and the holy Eucharist (mass).

The mass of the Lord's Supper will be celebrated by (archbishop of Bombay) Oswald Cardinal Gracias at St Michael Church, Mahim, at 7.00 pm."

The washing of the feet ceremony is universally organised at Maundy Thursday. Fr Gnana Jothi, parish priest of Christ the King Church in Shivaji Nagar, Govandi, has invited 12 senior citizens, men and women, for the honour.

Sacred Heart Church in Santacruz will conduct services on the grounds. Fr Felix D'Souza, parish priest, said, "For the washing of the feet, we are inviting our regular helpers like the gardener, cleaners, security guards, office staff and some migrants. Most of them are of other faiths. Our

nuns

will be honoured too."

Over in Thane, Fr Jerome Lobo , parish priest of St John the Baptist Church, said 12 choir members will be present for this ritual. "We have called two singers each from our Marathi, Konkani, Tamil and other language choirs. They are of different ages," he said.

Fr Michael Pinto, parish priest of Salvation Church (Portuguese Church), Dadar, said, "On Maundy Thursday each family will receive a big bread from the church with a prayer card. As they gather for supper, break the bread and share it, the head of the family will recite the prayer."

St Paul's Church, Dadar East, has several services designed around Holy Week. Parish priest Fr Austin Norris said, "Besides confessions, there is a Taize prayer to calm the mind. On Maundy Thursday we will have a mass for sick, aged and children at 5.00 pm. The main celebration of the Lord's Supper is at 7.30 pm, where the main celebrant will wash the feet of 12 people including women. Buns are distributed as a sign of fellowship."
