Oppo Find X7 Ultra Hand-on: A Point And Shoot Camera Disguised As Phone!

There is a new 'Ultra' phone in town - the Oppo Find X7 Ultra. It has the most impressive camera that I have seen in a smartphone recently. And, I must say, this is Oppo's best work yet. This phone can easily beat Samsung S24 Ultra, Xiaomi 14 Ultra or Vivo X100 Pro in terms of camera prowess.

The sad part? The Find X7 Ultra is only available in China and Oppo doesn't have any plans to bring it to India anytime soon. Regardless, the company has done a good job on this phone. I got a chance to use the China variant of the Find X7 Ultra for more than a week and decided to put its cameras to test. Without going into the details, it took some of the best shots that I have ever taken on a smartphone. Oppo has also equipped the phone with latest hardware including Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. Here is my experience of using this phone.

Photography Made Simple

Before I talk about how good the pictures are, let's take a look at the camera system. The Find X7 Ultra houses as many as four cameras on the back - a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 50-megapixel telephoto sensor, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, and a 50-megapixel periscope sensor.

The main camera has a 1-inch Sony sensor, which is supposed to allow more light and enable sharper images. It's surprising that we barely have any phones with a 1-inch sensor even in 2024 despite knowing how good they can be. Anyway, the camera system is tuned by Hasselblad. The collaboration continues on the portrait mode. It can capture images in four different focal lengths - 23mm, 44mm, 65mm, and 135mm, each matching different Hasselblad lenses.

The front has a 32-megapixel selfie camera.

But, these are all numbers and numbers don't make any sense unless there are results to back them. So, I took the phone to the beautiful Lodhi Garden in New Delhi (in this Delhi heat) and the day shots turned out to be incredibly crisp and sharp.

The main camera does justice to all the hype around it. The images I clicked retained great details. They were very sharp, had good definition, texture and colours.

Occasionally, the colours looked slightly saturated, but overall, in most cases I was impressed with the colour tuning on the camera. Even the images that had higher contrast looked good and were social media friendly.

The skin tones are natural and pleasing in all images. For those who like filtered images, you can choose the level of retouching. Personally, I found retouched images somewhat artificial and unnatural, but this is subjective and might appeal to some.

The zooming capabilities are also excellent. The Find X7 Ultra offers up to 120x digital zoom, and even at high zoom levels, details remain decently clear. Portrait shots are particularly impressive, showing excellent separation between the subject and background. The level of detail in 6x shots is also outstanding.

Night mode also performs well, although some images lacked a bit of detailing. But, no major complaints here.

Moving to the front, the selfies were great. There is clarity in images. However, I felt the facial tones in some selfies looked slightly different from reality. It adds a whitish-tone to the face, which probably could be because its front camera is not fine-tuned for Indian skin tone.

Overall, I think it's a fantastic camera system with a lot of options and flexibility to get a more personalised experience. I won't go too far and say that the Find X7 Ultra is a DSLR or professional camera killer but it surely ensures that you don't miss your professional camera too much. You can carry this phone to a vacation and be assured that you will end up clicking a lot of breathtaking images.

More Than Just Good-Looking Pictures

Now, apart from cameras, I like how the Oppo Find X7 Ultra looks. It has a vegan leather finish on the back and an aluminium frame, exuding a premium feel. It has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. It's a big phone, slightly on the heavier side too but I don't mind that. It's a trade-off for the overall experience you get. Also, almost all camera-heavy phones including the iPhone 15 Pro Max and S24 Ultra are big and bulky.

On the front, the Find X7 Ultra boasts a 6.82-inch curved AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection and 4500 nits of peak brightness. Its touch response is fantastic and colours look fairly accurate, making content consumption enjoyable.

There is also a VIP mode, which you can enable via the Alert Slider. It instantly disables location, camera, and mic access so if you want privacy, you can use this feature.

Under the hood, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra features a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, a 5000mAh battery, and supports 100W wired and 50W wireless charging.

Since the phone in on the Chinese ROM, I couldn't test its day-to-day performance as I wanted to. However, the phone held well when I was shooting pictures and videos on it.

My Two Cents

I wish the Find X7 Ultra was available in India. It would have been a great rival to the existing flagship phones in the country. The only challenge is that its starting price in China is CNY 599 which translates to roughly Rs 71,000. This is a direct translation and historically, we have seen that Indian price for some these phones is 10-15 pct higher than other countries. So, if Oppo is to launch the phone in India, it may cost over Rs 80,000. And, in case it decides to launch the top variant, we are potentially looking at the Rs 1 lakh mark.

That's a price point where things get highly competitive. It's a headache for Oppo though. They will decide how and when they want to bring this phone to the country.

As for my experience, I loved the computational photography on the device. I enjoyed every day with it. Overall, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra is a fully packed phone that can make Samsung, OnePlus and Vivo easily uncomfortable. Its impressive camera capabilities and stunning design make it a compelling choice for photography enthusiasts.

So, here is to hoping that we see the Find X series in India soon.
