Israel reportedly lowers demand of 40 hostages freed by Hamas to 33

According to a New York Times report, the change was prompted partly by the fact that Israel now believes that some of the 40 hostages it has initially insisted on have died while in Hamas captivity. Israel has reduced the number of hostages it will accept to be released by Hamas in the first phase of a cease-fire in Gaza from 40 to 33, the New York Times reported Monday, citing three Israeli officials.
