HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Passengers will now get automatic refunds if their flight in Connecticut is canceled or delayed more than three hours.

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) made a joint announcement on Monday about the new rules. The duo said their offices have received hundreds of complaints about the flights.

The state now has a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. Department of Transportation that allows it to investigate the complaints.

"Unreasonable delays" include three hours for domestic flights, and six hours for international ones. Airlines also now have to disclose fees upfront — something Blumenthal has pushed for at the national level since The Eras Tour Ticketmaster fiasco.

"The status quo won't fly anymore," he said at the Monday announcement. "Consumers deserve relief from the headaches and haggling that has been part of flying for most of our lives, especially recently."

Tong vowed to take more action, including banning airlines from selling flights they don't have the staff for, and making sure the companies don't upsell passengers trying to rebook their canceled flights.

"There's still a lot more to be done," he said. "These are important improvements, but not even close to what we need for travelers to protect people from Connecticut."

New national rules echo the measures Connecticut plans to take, including requiring refunds within a week.
