Brewers calling up Tyler Black, according to reports

The Milwaukee Brewers are promoting infielder Tyler Black, according to Jon Morosi. Black, who has been playing at first base in Nashville, is ranked as the team's No. 4 prospect and No. 46 in baseball according to MLB Pipeline. To make room for Black, Owen Miller was optioned to Triple-A Nashville and Wade Miley was moved to the 60-day IL.

The Brewers expect Black to give an injection of life to an offense that got off to a great start but which has been scuffling in the absence of Christian Yelich. A few eyebrows have been raised at Jake Bauers' consistent presence in the clean-up spot, despite his fairly dismal offensive profile. Black, who is also left-handed, figures to take most of those at bats from Bauers, even if Bauers remains on the active roster.

Black is off to a good enough start in the minors that he could no longer be ignored. The 23-year-old has hit .303/.393/.525 through 25 games with five home runs and three triples. Last year, Black led the Brewers' minor league system in OPS, triples, extra-base hits, and steals. He has an advanced approach that leads to a high batting average and a lot of walks—88 in 123 games last season—though some still have concerns about his power at the major league level. There are also defensive concerns around Black as a third baseman, but he should hold up fine at first.

It's another exciting day for Brewer fans, as Black becomes the sixth Brewers prospect to make the major leagues from last year's pre-season top 10.

Update: The Brewers made Black's call-up official Tuesday afternoon, with utility man Owen Miller sent to Triple-A Nashville to make space on the active roster and left-hander Wade Miley, who is out for the season with Tommy John surgery scheduled for next week, placed on the 60-day IL to make space on the 40-man roster.
