Bali to Host WWF, Slates Segara Kerthi Ceremony for Delegates

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bali will host the 10th World Water Forum (WWF) in Nusa Dua, Badung Regency, May 18-25, 2024. This event will be utilized to promote Bali tourism, one of which is by introducing the local wisdom of Segara Kerthi and Tumpek Uye to the delegates of WWF.

Head of the Government and Welfare Bureau of the Regional Secretariat of Bali Province I Ketut Sukra Negara said, Segara Kerthi is local wisdom that honors water, especially on the beach and the ocean. This tradition is rooted in Hinduism, a part of the Sad Kerthi or the six teachings about protecting the universe. This is an opportunity to show local wisdom to the world, especially the WWF delegation.

"With this Segara Kerthi ritual, we Balinese people have local wisdom not only at sekala (physical) but also at niskala (spiritual)," he said, as quoted from Antara.

Release of hatchlings and birds

The Segara Kerthi ritual coincides with the Tumpek Uye/Tumpek Kandang Holy Day. This ritual is celebrated by Hindus every 210 days as a form of gratitude and honor for animals that have helped human lives.

Therefore, the Segara Kerthi ceremony will also include the release of hatchlings and birds as a form of animal honoring.

The Segara Kerthi ceremony will be led by three sulinggih (Hindu priests) and involve indigenous people in the Serangan Bali Traditional Village. The WWF delegation and other guests will be present to witness the ceremony. "WWF delegates can also watch a number of sacred dances that will accompany the Segara Kerthi ceremony," he said.
