Samsung Announces Future Smartwatch And Smart Ring Plans

Samsung has teased future wearable plans as part of its latest financial reporting.

The giant announced its Q1 financial results, and in a shareholder update gave a nod as to its plans for the coming year.

"For wearables, [MX Business] will strengthen the Galaxy ecosystem experience through the expansion of new models and form factors like the Galaxy Ring," Samsung says.

"For smartwatches, the MX Business will strive to meet demand for upgrades through the launch of new premium models."

Samsung has already officially teased its upcoming smart ring, and showed a prototype at MWC 2024. However, less has been said of the next series of Samsung watches.

There's also a question of whether the use of the term "premium" indicates Samsung may go higher-end for the Galaxy Watch 7 family.

Samsung's Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic are reasonably affordable, and Samsung does not yet have a direct alternative to the Apple Watch Ultra 2.

There are other suggestions this may be about to change too. 2022 and 2023 release cycles suggest Samsung may plan to alternate releases of its adventure-ready Pro and more conventional Classic lines.

Following 2022's Watch 5 Pro, last year it made the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. 2024 may be the year of the Galaxy Watch 7 Pro, which should be comfortably its most advanced and high-end watch to date.

Rumours so far indicate a move to a 3nm processor architecture, but this is unlikely to have a dramatic effect beyond making it a little easier for Samsung to hit its battery longevity targets.

Judging by its previous release windows, Samsung could announce the next family of Galaxy Watch watches in August.

Will the Galaxy Ring come at the same time? It would make sense.

Apple is reportedly working on a smart ring. And if one is to arrive in 2024, it's likely to be unveiled in September as part of the iPhone 16 launch.

Big tech loves a rivalry, as seen in 2023 when Meta announced the Quest 3 in June just days before Apple went on to unveil the Vision Pro headset at WWDC.
