To the casual viewer, competing at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show might look as simple as getting a dog, grooming it and leading it around a ring. But there's a lot more involved in reaching and exhibiting at the most prestigious canine event in the U.S. The 148th annual show is set to start Saturday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. More than 2,500 dogs from 210 breeds and varieties have registered to vie for the best in show trophy to be awarded Tuesday night. They include breeds big and small, rare and familiar. This year's event comes as the U.S. dog show world faces a reckoning over child abuse charges against a judge.

Entertainment broadcaster Sam Rubin has died at age 64. The Los Angeles news station KTLA says in a statement that its beloved anchor and reporter died on Friday. No cause was released. Rubin had worked for the station since 1991 and was on a first-name basis with Hollywood's top stars. He conducted upbeat live interviews with actors and musicians from behind the anchor desk and was a mainstay at premiere red carpets and movie junkets. His final interview was with Jane Seymour on Thursday. She joined Tom Hanks, Viola Davis, Ben Stiller, Kiefer Sutherland, Octavia Spencer other Hollywood figures in mourning Rubin on social media.

Sean "Diddy" Combs is asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit alleging that he and two other men raped a 17-year-old girl in a New York recording studio in 2003. The federal court filing Friday is the latest piece of pushback against a series of lawsuits and a criminal sex-trafficking investigation against the 54-year-old rapper and music mogul. In their motion to dismiss the lawsuit, Combs and his lawyers argue that a New York city law that the suit is filed under is trumped by a New York state law that makes the suit too old. The filing says the lawsuit's allegations are "false and hideous."

LOS ANGELES — Sam Rubin, a veteran journalist who anchored KTLA's entertainment coverage for more than 30 years, died Friday in Los Angeles. He was 64.

The lawyer for the New Jersey man charged with stabbing author Salman Rushdie says he's in talks with prosecutors to try to resolve existing charges of attempted murder without a trial — as well as potential terrorism-related charges that could still be coming. Hadi Matar has been held without bail since his 2022 arrest after allegedly attacking the internationally acclaimed writer as he was about to speak at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York. Matar pleaded not guilty to assault and attempted murder after being indicted by a Chautauqua County grand jury. His lawyer Nathaniel Barone says the Justice Department is also considering separate federal charges, though none have yet been filed.

The winners of Miss USA and Miss Teen USA resigned from their titles within days of each other. Their decisions this week shine a spotlight on the Miss Universe Organization, which runs both pageants. Noelia Voigt cited mental health in giving up her Miss USA crown. Miss Teen USA UmaSofia Srivastava said her personal values no longer fully align with the direction of the organization. The resignations mark the first time in 72 years that the pageant group has gone without titleholders for the positions. The resignations have drawn calls for more transparency into Miss USA and its parent organization. Both have faced controversy in the past.

A judge in Utah has set a $100,000 bond for rapper NBA YoungBoy who faces dozens of charges involving a fraudulent prescription operation he allegedly orchestrated. KUTV-TV reports the 24-year-old rap artist whose real name is Kentrell Gaulden has appeared Thursday in a Utah court for the bond hearing. Gaulden was arrested April 16 at his home in Huntsville, where he was on house arrest while awaiting trial on federal weapons charges. He faces 63 felonies and misdemeanors related to the fraudulent prescription operation. Authorities say Gaulden will at some point be transferred back to federal custody in the U.S. Middle District Court of Louisiana.
