Iconic PCH Diner Patrick's Roadhouse Has Closed in Santa Monica

Original source (on modern site)

Patrick's Roadhouse in Santa Monica, the iconic green roadside diner adorned with kitsch and constantly celebrating St. Patrick's Day, has closed. The restaurant's current owner, Anthony Fischler, is trying to renegotiate a long-term lease with the building's landlord but needs $250,000 to cover back rent and building maintenance, which he hopes to raise on GoFundMe.

Patrick's Roadhouse has operated profitably for nearly its entire history but struggled during the COVID-19 pandemic when dining rooms were forced to close, according to the GoFundMe campaign page. During that time, the restaurant supported the community by providing meals to frontline workers and students. No proceeds from the GoFundMe will be utilized unless a new lease is secured and the amount is fully funded. Until then, Patrick's Roadhouse will remain closed indefinitely.

Opened in 1973 along Pacific Coast Highway, the quirky daytime spot founded by Bill Fischler has served locals and famous folks like Lucille Ball, Johnny Carson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Golden Hawn for over half a century.

A newish Cantonese restaurant in San Gabriel

Roving San Gabriel Valley reporter and Eater LA contributor Kristie Hang shared on Instagram that former dim sum specialist Elite has reopened after a fire damaged the building in late 2022. The new restaurant, named New Elite, no longer focuses on dim sum, instead serving traditional Cantonese food and "Cantonese-adjacent" regional specialties like Toishan-style savory rice pudding.

Hang says the ownership is the same, and that they plan to reopen the dim sum version of Elite in a shiny new location in a hotel, echoing the recent Chef Tony expansion on the ground floor of the Courtyard by Marriott in Monterey Park. Also, James Wang fans might be disappointed to learn their favorite SGV attorney doesn't show up on the new placemat advertisements.

A French chef goes to Mexico

Notable LA chef Ludo Lefebvre, who operates Petit Trois in Hollywood and Sherman Oaks, has been on an expansion tear lately. After opening Chez Maggy in Denver, the chef is opening a restaurant called Delphine at Costa Palmas, a 1,500-acre resort community in Los Cabos, Baja California, set to open this summer. Expect French Riviera vibes with diners sitting almost right up on the beach. Lefebvre hopes to use local seafood from the Sea of Cortez through dishes that evoke the south of France.

More Hardware in West Hollywood

Laurel Hardware's owner, Dean McKillen, is opening another restaurant across the street at 8445 Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, reports What Now LA. McKillen told the publication that he hopes the restaurant, which is unnamed and doesn't have a menu attached to it, could open next year. McKillen, who also owns the vibey semi-outdoor Ysabel on Fairfax, is also opening a place called Laurel Grill in Culver City.
