Cowboys free agent: Ezekiel Elliott contract details revealed

The Dallas Cowboys, for financial reasons, parted ways with former first-round pick Ezekiel Elliott before the 2023 campaign and gave the reigns to Tony Pollard. With the latter now with the Tennessee Titans and the Cowboys not drafting a running back last week, they brought back the former 2016 first-round pick after he spent last season with the New England Patriots.

With Elliott entering his ninth season, and not quite being the player he used to be, many had to be wondering at what cost his deal would come at for Dallas. Well, via ESPN's Todd Archer, the details of Elliott's deal have been revealed.

Ezekiel Elliott contract breakdown: 1 year, max $3m
Signing bonus: $375k (guaranteed)

Base: $1.25m (guaranteed)

Cap number: $2m

Active roster bonus: $375k total
Incentives:

1,100 scrimmage yards + playoffs - $250k

10 touchdowns + playoffs - $250k

51% playtime + playoffs - $500k

This is another win for the salary cap-friendly Cowboys who currently sit at about $6.3 million in space. It's pretty much a league-minimum deal. With Elliott playing in every game last season, his $375k in active roster bonuses count against the 2024 salary cap. If he were to miss any time in the upcoming season, the Cowboys would receive a cap credit of $22,058 per game.

Elliott had 955 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns in 2023. So, his roster bonuses in that regard will be a little tougher to get. Getting 51% of the snaps is a real unknown, but the making of the playoffs seems like a reachable mark.
