AG: Gunman shot dead outside Mount Horeb Middle School was a district student

Attorney General Josh Kaul said police officers responded to Mount Horeb Middle School Wednesday for a report of someone with a weapon outside the school. The school went into lockdown and some students were kept in their classrooms, while others were evacuated.Kaul said Mount Horeb police arrived on-scene, and shot and killed the person with the weapon. The subject was a student in the school district, who was a minor. ABC News is reporting that he was 14 years old. The student with the weapon never got inside the school and was shot outside, Kaul said. Authorities did not disclose whether or not the student fired any shots towards the school or towards police.No one else was physically injured, according to officials."This is any parent's nightmare," Kaul said. The attorney general said they do not believe there is any threat to public safety, but the law enforcement investigation continues. Some Mount Horeb police officers have been put on leave following the use of force, which is standard practice, Kaul said. They were wearing body cameras during the incident. Students were slowly released back to their families Wednesday evening starting at around 5pm. "I'm Incredibly grateful. We're very blessed all of our children are safe. And we're taking them home to love them tonight. I'm very proud of our school district for stopping something that could have been incredibly horrific. Worse than it already was," said Ali Peterson, who has multiple children that go to Mount Horeb schools.School District Superintendent Dr. Steve Salerno said classes are canceled Thursday, but the schools will be open for for support.He hopes to resume classes Friday.
