May might be a little slower on the AAA video game front compared to April's avalanche of titles, but there's still plenty to look forward to.

We're taking a look at some of the most exciting video game releases set to launch in May 2024.

2024 has seen an explosion of big-budget AAA releases come to PC and consoles so far. Pretty much since Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown launched at the tail-end of January, right through to the end of April with PS5 exclusive Stellar Blade exploding onto the scene, there's been an abundance of high-profile video games to jump into. May, by comparison, seems a lot tamer; still packed to the rafters in terms of actual releases, yes, but a lot of souped-up remasters, ports, and smaller gems you might have forgotten were coming out.

UPDATE: A previous version of this article included World of Goo 2 in the list of games releasing in May 2024, but this game has now been delayed until August (via Nintendo Life).

In this article we'll be running through the biggest games releasing on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC in May 2024, helping you to decide which ones to check out and invest your precious time in. The month might be light when it comes to huge AAA blockbusters, but there's an eclectic mix of titles spanning all platforms. Here's what May 2024 has in store for video game fans…

1. Endless Ocean Luminous (May 2) - Nintendo Switch

Serene scuba diving meets ocean exploration in this third instalment to Nintendo's cult classic underwater series where a sea of possibilities awaits. In addition to letting you get up close and personal with all kinds of sea life, ranging from sharks, manta rays and, yes, whales, Endless Ocean Luminous will offer players the chance to share the experience with up to 29 other players online (for the very first time). An in-game day-night cycle ensures that every expedition you take is unique, challenging you to scan different creatures in different locations at different points of the day. Prepare to take a deep breath when the totally tranquil Endless Ocean Luminous comes to Nintendo Switch on May 2, 2024.

2. V Rising (May 8)- PC and PS5

V Rising leaves early access this month, brining with it all the vampiric content released so far. (

Gothic open-world horror gets an isometric upgrade in V Rising, the upcoming action RPG from Stunlock Studios set to finally leave early access on May 8, 2024. You play a vampire who has been awakened after centuries of slumber, on a quest to rebuild your evil vampire empire. In addition to top-down combat against a variety of different ghoulish enemies and bosses, of equal draw is the ability to build your own personalised castle in between the action. This creates a healthy gameplay mix that is more in-depth than a lot of other vampire portrayals in video games. With an arsenal of deadly weapons and abilities to master and multiple biomes to do it in, V Rising reaches full strength when its 1.0 version comes to PC and PS5 this month.

3. Crow Country (May 9) - PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and PC

We've been in quite the survival horror renaissance these past few years, ever since Capcom stripped its iconic Resident Evil series back to its roots with the launch of Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 remake. Indie developers have now quickly hopped onto this rising trend with their own distinct take, too, the latest being Crow Country from SFB Games. Very much mimicking the old pre-rendered backgrounds from the early 90s, it mixes in this atmospheric aesthetic with inventory management and a dour colour palette to truly evoke the survival horror classics. Expect plenty of backtracking, puzzle-solving, and horrific sights when Crow Country launches on May 9, 2024.

4. The Rogue Prince of Persia (May 14) - PC

Another month means another 2D roguelike to check out. In this case, it's none other than The Rogue Prince of Persia from Ubisoft, another new take on the long-running time-twisting franchise that marks the second new entry this year. We enjoyed a brief, 30-minute hands-on preview session recently, intrigued by how The Prince of Persia has been adapted into the fight, die, then fight again format. While its art style might be a tad too cartoony for some, being able to mantle, leap, and run up the walls is what could potentially set The Rogue Prince of Persia apart from other genre entries. We'll find out for certain when it enters early access on May 14, 2024.

5. Braid: Anniversary Edition (May 14) - PS5, PS4, and PC

Originally slated for release on April 30, 2024, a slight two-week delay means that this ground-up remake of Jonathan Blow's revered indie game now comes to modern platforms on May 14, 2024. Braid: Anniversary Edition is very much the same Xbox Live Arcade classic as before, complete with the expected time-rewind antics, only now featuring new visuals, levels, and commentary from Blow himself about the game's overarching design. It looks set to become the definitive way of playing one of the most important indie games ever, touched up for a new generation of players.

6. Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut (May 16) - PC

Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut gets its highly anticipated PC version on May 16, 2024, following in the footsteps of other ported PlayStation hits such as God of War and Horizon Forbidden West. Though not strictly a new release, Sucker Punch Productions' open-world samurai adventurer is sure to wow PC players with its emotional story, and in-depth combat centred around stances, as well as one of the most gorgeous locations ever depicted in a game in 13th-century Japan. You play as Jin Sakai, the last of your clan who must take the fight back to the Mongolian invaders. It's sure to look and play better than ever before when it makes the jump from PS5 to PC.

7. Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 (May 21) - Xbox Series X|S and PC

One of the earliest first-party Xbox Series X|S titles to ever be shown ahead of the Microsoft console's release, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 finally breaks cover on May 21, 2024. Ninja Theory follows up the 2017 original with another accurate depiction of mental health, as players once again take on the role of Senua as she fights to survive within a dark and twisted version of Viking Iceland. New this time around is a more dynamic combat system, alongside the return of permadeath and environmental puzzles. Developed on Unreal Engine 5, it certainly looks to be one of the most beautiful games released during this generation thus far, wrapped up in an emotional Nordic tale.

8. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (May 23) - Nintendo Switch

Arguably the best instalment into Nintendo's Paper Mario franchise gets the Nintendo Switch remake treatment on May 23, 2024, with Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, looking and playing much better than ever before according to our most recent impressions. The turn-based battle system based around dodges and timed button presses returns, as does the same charming papercraft aesthetic that we last saw when Paper Mario: The Origami King came to the hybrid console as far back as 2020. This Thousand-Year Door upgrade is the latest in a long line of remakes set to arrive on Switch this year, sending out the console with a bang.

9. Multiversus (May 28) - PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC

We didn't know it at the time, but when Warner Bros.' crossover brawler first released back in July 2022, this was actually in early access, open beta form. Well, we'll finally get a sense of what changes and new characters have been added when the 1.0 version of Multiversus launches on May 28, 2024, bringing with it characters from Game of Thrones, the Batman universe, Scooby Doo, and other beloved franchises who can all scrap it out with each other in the style of Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Feedback received from the beta has seen certain character kits finely tuned for better gameplay and hit detection, meaning hopefully this time around Multiversus will be here to stay after it relaunches.
