Airbnb's New 'Icons' Category Has Some of the Coolest, Most Unconventional Stays on the Site

Original source (on modern site) | Article images: [1]

Once you've dropped your bags, it's time for the training exercises: experimenting with mutant energy elixirs in the lab (drink mixology), learning a quick defense and attack routine in the Danger Room, and figuring out your mutant abilities after doing an X-Men-themed quiz—all interspersed with plenty of photo-ops. After a quick trip to Professor Xavier's office, you're left alone by the staff for the night to enjoy your meal while watching your favorite X-Men films and TV shows.

While not all of the new Icons properties are as experiential as the X-Men mansion, which begins with a roughly two-hour activity staffed by a variety of highly entertaining cast members (guests can also book the experience without the overnight stay), they each have something special to offer. The 11 Icons properties that launched May 1 include a stay in the house from Up in New Mexico (it actually floats, thanks to a crane operator who lifts it up 50 feet in the air once all guests are outside), a trip to Riley's control center in Inside Out 2, and a night in Prince's Minneapolis Purple Rain house where you'll get an exclusive studio session. The Icons span a variety of different themes and properties across the world, but all are either free via random selection (guests are asked to fill out their information and answer why they want to do the experience, then a group is randomly selected to have their answers reviewed) or under $100 per person. Other Icons opportunities include a living room performance from Doja Cat, a trip with Kevin Hart to his Coramino Live Lounge speakeasy, or a stay in Bollywood star Janhvi Kapoor's family home in India, hosted by the star herself.

The Icons category lives on Airbnb's homepage for easy access. For the properties and experiences that aren't available yet, there will be a countdown on the site that displays the time until each Icon goes live. Once live, guests enter their information for the chance to receive a digital golden ticket and book the experiences through the app. As with previous pop culture-inspired stays, many of these are available for a limited time; for example, the X-Men Mansion will be available for 20 different dates scattered throughout the next few months. There are more chances to snag a stay, though, as more than 4,000 golden tickets will be available throughout 2024.
