The legendary Canadian broadcaster, his wife and other family members got to see son Tyler Black live out a dream by playing in the Major Leagues for the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night, but that wasn't it. Not by a long shot.

Tyler Black, 23, who grew up in Stouffville, Ont., was a first-round pick by the Brewers (33rd overall) in 2021 and was called up earlier in the day. There were no guarantees he'd even play in the game, but the Black family made sure to be on hand regardless, cutting short a Cancun trip to get to Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Black didn't start but came on when designated hitter Gary Sanchez got injured in the first inning. When he eventually got to the plate, Black delivered a long double to centre field.

But while Black's first hit was a big deal, the next hit was just as special.

Bally Sports Wisconsin got broadcaster Sophia Minnaert to head to the stands to interview Rod Black and Minnaert gave him the microphone. After some small talk, Tyler Black ripped a single through the gap with his father calling it, saying: "There's a base hit for my boy, Tyler Black, two-for-two. There you go. Oh, there you go," he said.

And, just to add to the moment, he added it was his wife's birthday. "Two-for-two, happy birthday Nancy."

Black, originally from Winnipeg, spent more than 30 years with CTV and Bell Media, calling countless Blue Jays, Raptors and CFL games as well as Olympics, boxing and curling events. He may have found a new home stateside.

"It's awesome, I think were going to start drinking heavily," Black joked on the broadcast. "We're never leaving Milwaukee."

Tyler Black is one of Milwaukee's top prospects and was slashing .303/.393/.525 with five home runs and 18 RBI in 25 games for AAA Nashville before being called up.

The Brewers beat Tampa Bay in the game, which also included a bench-clearing brawl, adding even more Canadian flavour to it. Rays outfielder Jose Siri and Brewers right-hander Abner Uribe were both ejected, along with both managers.

Tyler Black said afterward his first game was "crazy" and added to Milwaukee reporters that he "didn't really feel my feet at all for three hours. I was fortunate to get in there. Obviously, Gary went down. Don't like to see that. Couple guys told me before the game just be ready to go. I was lucky enough to get in there.

"At that point, I just strapped it on and said, 'Here we go,'" Black said. "Wouldn't want it any other way."
