A 19-year old male faces drug trafficking charges after Windsor police on Tuesday executed yet another search warrant at a downtown business selling hallucinogenic products.

Members of the drugs and guns unit searched the Fun Guyz dispensary in the 300 block of Ouellette Avenue, seizing almost $42,000 of psilocybin, commonly known as magic mushrooms, and $2,420 in Canadian currency.

Police charged an employee of the dispensary.

But as with previous raids at the same location, no sooner had the police departed than Fun Guys was back in business. On Thursday, the 'OPEN' sign was illuminated and a notice taped to the front door was encouraging customers to 'knock for service.'

In July, August, and December of 2023, officers executed warrants at the same location, resulting in the seizure of an estimated $100,000-plus worth of psilocybin-infused products.

Following the first police raid last July, a business co-owner said the shelves had been re-stocked and the store reopened within 24 hours. "We are open for business as usual," he told the Windsor Star at the time.

The company opened multiple retail locations across Ontario, with Windsor's opening in late June of last year. A co-owner of the Toronto-based company said its sales might be illegal, but the goal is similar to the path previously laid out that led to the legalization of cannabis in Canada.

Sales of products containing the hallucinogen psilocybin are currently illegal in Canada. Windsor police at the time of the first raid warned it was committed to "enforcing current laws around illegal narcotics, and will ensure that individuals who illegally possess or traffic in these substances are held criminally responsible."

  2. Concerns raised as 'magic mushroom' store opens in Windsor

Health Canada warns that taking magic mushrooms can cause people to "see, hear or feel things that are not there, or to experience anxiety, fear, nausea and muscle twitches accompanied by increased heart rate and blood pressure."

The Canadian government, however, also says: "There is increasing interest in the potential therapeutic uses of magic mushrooms and of psilocybin, one of the active ingredients in magic mushrooms. While clinical trials with psilocybin have shown promising results, at this time, there are no approved therapeutic products containing psilocybin in Canada or elsewhere."

This remains an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Windsor Police Service's DIGS unit at 519-255-6700, ext. 4361.
