Zydeco accordionist and Lafayette native Dwayne Dopsie posted a picture on social media Wednesday of himself with singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Ronnie Wood backstage at the main stage at the Fair Grounds during the Rolling Stones' soundcheck.

He wrote that he had rehearsed with the band and would be part of Thursday's show at the 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

"This is a legendary Rock and Roll band I grew up listening too, and now to be playing on stage with them giving my zydeco feel to their music is just mind blowing and a true blessing!" Dopsie wrote.

Herman Fuselier, an Advocate columnist and world renowned expert on Cajun and zydeco music, called Dopsie the Jimi Hendrix of accordian.

"It's not every day a Zydeco musician gets to play with a band that's sold 250 million records," Fuselier said.

The youngest of the late zydeco king Rockin' Dopsie's eight children, accordionist Dwayne Dopsie, 45, was born in Lafayette. He founded his band, the Zydeco Hellraisers, when he was only 19.

Dopsie and the high-octane band, which is based in New Orleans, have performed in more than 40 countries around the globe.

The band released its most recent album, "Bon Ton," via Louisiana Red Hot Records in 2019.

Dopsie has been nominated twice for Grammy awards in the Best Regional Roots Music Album category.

In addition to Dopsie, WWL-TV originally reported that New Orleans rhythm & blues legend Irma Thomas had confirmed that she would join the Stones at the Fair Grounds to sing "Time Is On My Side."

She confirmed Thursday morning that she had also rehearsed with the band on Wednesday.

Staff writer Keith Spera contributed to this report.
