Jake Paul and Mike Tyson will be putting it all on the line when they compete in a controversial boxing match this summer.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer is 9-1 as a professional, and has a chance to add to that record after his fight with heavyweight legend Tyson was sanctioned in the state of Texas last week. But that decision has divided fans and experts, with many feeling that at 58 the boxing icon shouldn't be fighting.

Paul is 27-years-old, and will be moving up to heavyweight for the fight after previously weighing in as low as 183lb for his professional bouts. Meanwhile, Tyson will be competing for the first time since a 2020 exhibition against Roy Jones Jr which ended in a draw.

Jake Paul warned he 'cannot lose' to Mike Tyson as career hangs in the balance

A key part of Jake Paul's assault on the combat sports world has been his feud with seemingly the entirety of Mixed Martial Arts. He has defeated a number of UFC legends in the boxing ring, flooring them all, much to the chagrin of MMA fans.

One UFC legend who is convinced by Paul, however, is former middleweight and light-heavyweight title contender Chael Sonnen. The American is excited by the upcoming bout, but believes that a loss could be career-ending for Paul.

The social media star has already suffered defeat once when he moved up in level to face fellow prospect Tommy Fury in February of 2023. But a loss to a 58-year-old, even one as legendary as Tyson, could have a severe impact on his career.

"Jake Paul is a slight favourite over a greatly experienced and oversized Mike Tyson," Sonnen told fans on his YouTube channel. "I mean, Mike Tyson does not want to lose and Jake cannot lose.

"Mike's reputation and everything so-on-and-so-forth is going to change. Jake's career comes to a screeching halt at least in terms of his trajectory where he's trying to get to Canelo, it comes to a halt. It's a very fascinating situation."

Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson rules confirmed for controversial boxing fight

After initial speculation that Paul vs Tyson would be an exhibition bout, Most Valuable Promotions have now confirmed that it will, in fact, be a fully professional fight. Netflix will air the event free to subscribers in what is likely to be one of the most viewed events in recent boxing memory.

However, there will be slight alterations to the rules in order for the fight to be sanctioned in Texas. Instead of the standard three-minute rounds and 10oz gloves, the duo will wear 14oz gloves while they compete over eight two-minute rounds.

In a statement released on April 29, Most Valuable Promotions co-founder Nakisa Bidarian said: "Mike Tyson and Jake Paul signed on to fight each other with the desire to do so in a sanctioned professional fight that would have a definitive outcome.

"Over the past six weeks MVP has worked with its partners to satisfy the requirements of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR) to sanction Paul Vs Tyson and we are grateful that we have gotten to this point."
