TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will visit Brazil and Paraguay in early May, aiming to bolster economic ties with the South American countries and counter Chinese and Russian efforts to woo the region.

During an official trip to Washington this month, Kishida signaled that Japan is ready to share the burden of upholding a rules-based international order with the U.S. Courting the emerging and developing countries of the Global South is part of this push.
