Ryan Gosling 'cried too hard' during Taylor Swift singalong in 'The Fall Guy': 'There were so many tears'

Ryan Gosling did a lot of crying while filming The Fall Guy. A lot of crying.

The actor stars in David Leitch's action blockbuster as a stuntman named Colt Seavers, who gets a job working on a movie directed by his ex-girlfriend Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt). The film is predictably packed with explosions, falls, and death-defying car flips, but one of the most delightful scenes features no stunts at all, just a very emotional Colt, crying in his car to Taylor Swift's sad-girl anthem "All Too Well."

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gosling explained that he fully committed to sobbing on set — so much so that Leitch couldn't even use all of the teary footage.

"I remember I cried too hard, and they cut it out," Gosling revealed. "There were so many tears."

"The amount of tears they cut in post was almost hysterical, actually," Blunt added.

According to Leitch, the scene was born out of an early brainstorming session, during which Gosling suggested that Colt needed to have an emotional breakdown after reuniting with his ex, Jody.

"The idea of this hardened stunt guy being overly sentimental was a great idea from Ryan," the director explained. "We were playing a different romantic track on the day. We were really trying to get into the mood, and I can't exactly remember what the romantic track was."

It was Leitch's wife and producer Kelly McCormick who lobbied for Swift's "All Too Well," and after syncing the track to the footage of Gosling crying, Leitch knew they had found the perfect sad soundtrack. He also notes that he and McCormick decided on the song before Swift launched her record-setting Eras tour, and as they finished editing, he noticed that suddenly, Swift's music was everywhere.

"It just got stronger and stronger as her tour went on," he explains. "We're in post editing, and I'm like, 'This is amazing. We've licensed this song. Her catalogue's getting more and more popular. How lucky are we right now?' It's almost as much luck as having the stars of Barbie and Oppenheimer in your movie. So, a lot of things were happening for The Fall Guy that were going our way."

Gosling even brought his love for "All Too Well" to his April 13 appearance on Saturday Night Live, singing a variation of the song in his monologue as a way to say goodbye to Barbie's Ken. (Blunt made a cameo as well, joining him to say her own farewells to her Oppenheimer character Kitty.) Best of all? Swift herself gave Gosling's rendition her stamp of approval, writing on Instagram, "Watch me accidentally catch myself singing this version on tour. This monologue is EVERYTHING."

The Fall Guy is in theaters now.
