WASHINGTON (7News) — A 3-year-old girl is dead after a shooting in Southeast D.C. Friday night, according to Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officials.

D.C. Police officials shared an update during a news conference. Watch below:

Officers responded to the sound of gunshots around 9 p.m. and shortly after they were called to a firehouse in the area of Irving Street, Southeast and 24th Street, Southeast.

When they arrived, officers found a young girl, later identified as Ty'ah Settles of Southeast, D.C., suffering from gunshot wounds. D.C. Fire and Police officials immediately began rendering aid.

Settles was airlifted by Park Police to a hospital where she died from her injuries, according to officials.

"This is an absolute tragedy, and it's unacceptable," an MPD official said during a Friday news conference. "A 3-year-old girl lost her life today, my phone should be ringing right now. We really need the community to reach out and help us."

A preliminary investigation revealed that Settles was inside a car at the time of the shooting and officials do not believe she was the intended target.

Officials said they found multiple shell casings in the 2200 block of Hartford Street, Southeast, indicating the incident involved an exchange of gunfire.
