'Not doing it again'… UFC legend announces retirement after vicious one-punch knockout

One of the most exciting fighters in UFC history hung up their gloves today as Matt Brown announced his retirement from MMA.

The 43-year-old went 24-19 in a professional career that spanned almost 20 years, the majority of which was spent in the big leagues of the UFC. In his 43 professional fights he went to the judge's scorecards just eight times meaning win or lose, it was always thrilling when he stepped into the octagon.

Brown signed with the UFC after appearing on the seventh season of The Ultimate Fighter in 2008, and imemdiately set about making his mark at 170lb.

Taking to Instagram this afternoon, Brown announced that he wouldn't be competing again after his win over Court McGee almost a year ago to the day. He landed a one-punch stoppage on McGee within the opening round, but didn't return to the cage after that.

"Not doing it again," he wrote in a lengthy post. "I'm out. That's the announcement. My life will now be dedicated to serving others. Growing others in the martial arts and building businesses that can help the community and the world.

"Thanks to Dana White and UFC for giving me a platform to express myself and my brand but it is time to move on to bigger, better things! I'll talk about this on the podcast with Damon Martin and go even deeper when I start my own podcast that I've talked about starting for years now lol…

Tributes pour in for Matt Brown as UFC legend retires from MMA

Brown is considered one of the best fighters never to compete for a world title in the promotion; coming within a hair of beating Robbie Lawler in a 2014 welterweight title eliminator. And that respect came through with tributes pouring in from around the world following his retirement.

Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson wrote: "Was an honor my friend! Thank you for the lessons! You are a legend!" Shane Burgos then added: "Been a fan since your head kick KO on TUF… Congrats on a great career and all the best in your future endeavors."

Fans across social media also paid tribute to Brown, noting his propensity for violence and fighting anyone at any time for any reason. Many branded him "Your favorite fighter's favorite fighter."

While it had been speculated throughout the months following his win over McGee last year, fans were blindsided by his sudden retirement today. He had landed two knockouts in his last three fights, and only lost to Bryan Barbarena by a split decision.

However, there was perhaps no greater retirement moment for Brown than his victory against McGee, which was part of the UFC's fourth card on ABC. He was rewarded with a $50,000 bonus for the stunning knockout which came from a single shot with seconds to go in the first round.

Matt Brown leaves the sport with 16 knockout wins and six submissions. He lost the majority of his fights that went to the scorecards, preferring to search for a finish as he picked up two wins by decision over the years.
