NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — Gov. JB Pritzker (D-Ill.) on Thursday announced a $827 million investment to expand Rivian's facility in Normal to build its newest model.

The investment comes from the state's REV Fund, an incentive program from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to bolster clean energy manufacturing in Illinois. The expansion is expected to cost $1.5 billion.

"I believe in the future of Rivian and the state of Illinois does too and we're making investments to prove it," said Pritzker.

Pritzker said the expansion will enable the Normal facility to become the sole producer of the electric vehicle's newest model, R2, billed as a midsize SUV. It will also create at least 550 jobs.

"That package is built on long term commitments Rivian is making to our state, to provide the type of well-paying jobs and economic opportunity that make this a good deal for the taxpayers of Illinois," he said.

The partnership also brings a significant investment to the workforce, Pritzker said, including another manufacturing training academy and dual credit apprentice program for high school students.

"Not only are we creating the jobs of the future here, we are providing Illinoisians with the skills they need to build those jobs," said Pritzker. "We have focused on industries of the future with significant growth potential, pairing that with investments in our workforce to foster sustainable long term economic success. Each and every dollar invested in this market is a win for the working people of Illinois."

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said the team at the Normal facility is second to none, and it makes sense for them to launch R2 exclusively from there.

"Ultimately, the product, the technology, the brand, the look, the feel of the vehicles is only possible with the team that makes that happen," he said. "We couldn't be more excited, we're leaning into a community that we're so heavily invested in already."

Rivian's Normal facility has manufactured more than 100,000 electric vehicles since opening in 2021.
