NORWALK, Conn. (WTNH) — Gov. Ned Lamont and the Connecticut Department of Transportation announced that Interstate 95 North and South reopened Sunday morning in Norwalk.

This comes after state police believe a driver attempting to merge onto I-95 South caused the fiery crash Thursday morning under the Fairfield Avenue bridge in Norwalk.

According to state police, a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro LT was traveling southbound on Route 7 when it began to merge onto the far right lane of Interstate 95. That is when it collided with the front end of a 2011 Kenworth Construct T800 truck driving in the right center lane.

The video below is from News 8 at 6 p.m. on May 5.

The impact of the crash caused the Kenworth truck to veer into the left-center lane and collide with another truck, a 2014 Freightliner Cascadia.

The Kenworth truck was carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline and erupted into flames before coming to a final stop underneath the Fairfield Avenue overpass. State police said the fire caused severe structural damage to the overpass, and officials decided to demolish and reconstruct the Fairfield Avenue bridge completely.

State police continue to investigate this crash, and so far, no charges have been brought against the drivers involved.

All three drivers did not report any serious injuries to state police.

The I-95 bridge demolition has since entered its fourth day. According to the Department of Transportation, construction crews worked around the clock to get the road open and running for travelers.

The DOT opened the northbound lanes of I-95 Saturday evening.

The Norwalk Police Department urges travelers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Drivers can visit CTRoads.org for updates and the best detours to avoid traffic congestion.
