Kind-hearted builder steps up to fix fence job ditched by dodgy tradie

Original source (on modern site)

You might remember our story on the fleeing fencer who took deposits and ran.

Brendan Hawxwell even left cancer patient Judie out of pocket.

A Current Affair has some good news for that customer and it's all thanks to an incredible viewer who reached out and wanted to make things right.

A Current Affair had good news for Judie about her fence and it's all thanks to an incredible viewer (Nine)

"Very grateful for it, for him and the team at A Current Affair for doing this because it's made a big difference to how I feel," Gold Coast grandmother Judie said, tearing up.

Jared O'Leary from Aussie State Construction replied: "That's why I done (sic) it for - to make you happier."

It's the moment that Judie thought she might never see.

Her fence was finally getting finished free of charge nine months after regrettably handing over thousands to the fleeing fencer Hawxwell.

The act of kindness from one stranger to another meant more than just getting a fence around Judie's Gold Coast home.

This was privacy and security for her as she battles stage 4 cancer.

"So these are tears of joy about the kindness of people like Jared and his mates that have been helping him to do this," Judie said.

"As you know, I've had cancer ... I can sort of feel at peace about what's going on and I can let go of all the stress that we've had."

Hawxwell, from Brisbane Fencing & Decking, took her deposit, ripped out her old fence and ran.

Queensland's Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath even called him out on our show: "He's a despicable individual and he should be held accountable for what he's doing."

Since we exposed Hawxwell's dodgy work on A Current Affair, Jared reached out and came to Jane and Judie's rescue.

"I'm glad I've come and done it. I couldn't have done it for nicer people," he said.

He offered Judie his labour free of charge. He just needed a hand buying materials.

Jared's business is based in Brisbane but he's been driving back and forth to the Gold Coast every day to get the job done.

"I think the great thing about people like Jared coming forward and offering to help is we kind of show people like Brendan that there are good people in this world," Judie's daughter Jane told A Current Affair.

His mate Rohan from Green Room Gardening and Landscape Solutions also pitched in.

Jared said he made the decision to put up his hand to help after seeing Jane and Judie's story on A Current Affair.

"It kind of brought a tear to my eye that there's people ripping nice people off like Judie and Jane and what's it for me? Just my time," he said.

Judie's life has been a nightmare for months thanks to Hawxwell but it's been made right within just days because of Jared.

"God has answered my prayers in this way and I'm very thankful for that," Judie said tearfully.

"Well my job is complete knowing that I brought a smile to your face and taken a worry out of your life," Jared said.
