An alleged driver has been charged as a 19-year-old fights for life after he allegedly fell from the roof of a car in Melbourne's east in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A 19-year-old from Rye is in hospital with serious injuries after he allegedly came off the roof of a moving 4WD on Harrison Street near Rye Street just after 2am yesterday.

Police allege he was riding on the roof of the car while a 19-year-old Glen Iris man was behind the wheel.

Victoria Police Detective Sergeant Stephen Hill told 9News that car surfing "was an extremely dangerous exercise".

"To fall from a moving onto quite hard bitumen... it's a recipe for disaster," he said.

The Glen Iris man has today been charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury and bailed to appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
