Australian football legend Malcolm Blight is holding firm with the Brisbane Lions, despite their poor start to 2024.

The Lions are yet to win a game at the Gabba this season and are currently 2-5 and coming off a big loss to GWS.

They face Gold Coast in the Q-Clash on Sunday night and the question was posed to Blight - if the Lions lose, are their premiership hopes dashed?

"No, I don't think their flags hopes are done if they can't win on Sunday," Blight told SEN's Sportsday SA.

"I still look at their list and there's too much talent for them not to really focus on September somewhere.

"I must say, my favourite player Lachie Neale has been up and down this year. He hasn't been as dominant for as many games and he needs a few younger guys to help him out."

Around the league, the likes of Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, Tom Liberatore, Max King, Tom Stewart, Adam Cerra and more have been named for this weekend, but Blight believes Brisbane getting Oscar McInerney back from injury is as big as any of them.

"There's some big names in this week, but he is key for Brisbane, they really do lack someone else (in the ruck). That's as good an in as there is for the whole round," Blight added.

Chris Fagan's Lions have largely dominated their crosstown rivals over the years, though Gold Coast has had a strong start to 2024 under Damien Hardwick.
