Australian Formula 1 driver Oscar Piastri has said he was pleased with qualifying sixth for Monday's Miami Grand Prix.

Piastri will start the race alongside his McLaren teammate Lando Norris who qualified fifth, while fellow Aussie Daniel Ricciardo will start from the back of the grid.

Max Verstappen's bid for three-straight Miami Grand Prix wins will begin on pole after the Dutchman was fastest in qualifying on Sunday morning AEST, hours after winning the sprint race.

Piastri, who finished sixth in the sprint race, was consistently in the top 10 during qualifying.

The Australian, who sits sixth in the drivers' championship, said he was pleased with his performance on Sunday morning and was ready to tackle the grand prix.

"It felt like it was a good qualifying session, and the car was consistent the whole way through," he said.

"I don't think there was too much more in it to be able to push us any further forward, so I am pleased.

"The team have done a good job, so let's see what we can do tomorrow."

Ricciardo was only able to manage 17th fastest in qualifying, after producing a terrific fourth in the sprint race.

A three-place grid penalty, for an infringement a fortnight ago in China, will send Ricciardo to the foot of the grid.

The Miami Grand Prix will be held at on Monday at 6am, AEST.
