Police say man was gardening when fight broke out with elderly neighbours and one was killed

A 26-year-old man, who was gardening when a fight allegedly broke out with his elderly neighbours, has had his matter briefly mentioned in a Brisbane court after being charged with murder and manslaughter.

Nicholas Reeves, a man in his 70s, was found dead in a Bramston Court home in Burpengary East on Thursday morning when police visited the property to conduct a welfare check.

His wife Suzanne Reeves, also in her 70s, was taken to the Royal Brisbane Hospital with "significant injuries to the head", Detective Inspector David Harbison said.

The man had been charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder, according to police.

He was refused bail and is his matter was adjourned in the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court to late July.

Detective Inspector Harbison told media the 26-year-old man was believed to have been gardening at the house next door when an argument allegedly broke out and the victims were "severely injured, one fatally".

"Police are still investigating if an implement or weapons were used in this incident … we don't have the full facts yet," he said.

Authorities said the man was onsite when police arrived and was taken into custody without incident.

"He was just seated waiting for police," Detective Inspector Harbison said.

He said the man was not known to the victims, adding that it was not a domestic violence incident.

The house next door has also been declared a crime scene, and police are urging witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact police.
