Detectives have laid charges following the discovery of a woman's body in northern Victoria.

Police found the woman, identified as 49-year-old Emma Bates, inside a property on Campbell Rd, Cobram about 2.15pm on Tuesday.

It is understood she had upper body injuries and died at the scene.

Police took her partner John Torney into custody and on Wednesday charged the 39-year-old Cobram man with intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury, common law assault, aggravated assault of a female and unlawful assault.

"He is expected to face an out-of-sessions court hearing tonight, where police will look to remand him to face Shepparton Magistrates' Court on Friday," police said in a statement.

"Police will allege the parties involved are known to each other."
