A 21-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man were arrested at the scene and originally charged with attempted murder.

Police allege the incident occurred at a small dwelling towards the back of the property.

Detective Acting Inspector Zitny said police believe the victim may have been at the property for three days.

"There is evidence that suggests that the victim was in the vicinity of the address on Monday the 29th (of April) in the evening. There is evidence that the victim was in the location throughout Tuesday the 30th and into Wednesday the first of May," he said.

"As to how he got there, we're still investigating.

"At this stage indications are that the injuries sustained to the victim occurred over a prolonged period of time."

He said that would be further investigated in a post-mortem scheduled for Tuesday.
