Lando Norris has rued a "silly" mistake that resulted in his run to ninth place during sprint qualifying in Miami.

Norris was tipped to be one of Max Verstappen's closest challengers in the final segment of the qualifying session, having showcased strong pace in the previous sessions.

However, the McLaren driver's effort saw him classify in ninth place with team-mate Oscar Piastri three places ahead in sixth.

Norris accepted blame for the lacklustre result, acknowledging he overtstepped the limits of the car during the lap.

"I just pushed too hard, as simple as that," Norris said.

"The car was feeling very good. Just silly to be honest, a couple of mistakes in Turn 1 and a big spiral from there.

"It's a shame, the team has done a good job, the upgrades are working, so I'm happy with everything, just not with one thing."

Norris hopeful over recovery

It is not the first time that Norris has been self-critical regarding his qualifying efforts as he voiced disapproval with his one-lap driving at a series of events in 2023.

McLaren arrived at the Miami round with a major upgrade package, with the entire new package fitted on Norris' car.

When asked if the upgrades give him faith over the remainder of the weekend, Norris stated: "I hope so, the pace was very good.

"Probably one of the quickest. So, disappointed with today but I will do my best tomorrow."
