CAM Waters calmly navigated 200 miles at Kansas Speedway and an irate rival post-race to collect his maiden top 20 NASCAR result.

In his second appearance in the Truck Series for ThorSport Racing, Waters qualified 20th and stayed out of trouble thereafter in a solid run.

The Australian lost ground early, sliding to 28th by Lap 13 of 134, before recovering.

He sat 21st entering the final 20 laps, and gained two more positions from there to finish 19th and hot on the heels of fellow Ford driver Layne Riggs.

Riggs was far from impressed by a late-race exchange between the pair though and expressed as much in a confrontation afterwards.

Waters appeared to approach the 21-year-old to explain himself and/or apologise, but was met with an animated response.

With crew chief Josh Hankish coming to his defence, Waters coolly exited the scene.

With Kansas having provided a different type of challenge to Martinsville where he debuted last month, it's another box ticked for Waters as he eyes a potential future in the United States.

"I would love to race NASCAR full-time, but getting into NASCAR is very challenging," Waters was quoted earlier in the weekend.

"And right now, I'm having a lot of fun in Australia and doing the NASCAR races this year. It's actually been pretty cool. And a good balance, I think.

"So, for now, just get through this weekend, like we did in Martinsville. But just see what may or may not clash later in the year, and that's kind of a good concept."

Corey Heim took the Truck Series win at Kansas, in a race where just 14 drivers finished on the lead lap.

Waters will now return to Australia in preparation for Supercars' next round, the Perth SuperSprint, on May 17-19.
