Pies go down against Southport: Round Six takeaways

Collingwood has gone down by 27 points in their Round Six clash against Southport in Queensland on Saturday.

The Pies started slowly as they conceded the opening goal of the game, however forward Reef McInnes helped them get going with a lovely set shot for his side's first of the day.

The Pies trailed by 16 points at the main break, however early goals from the retuning Nathan Krueger and Co-captain Sam Glover in the second quickly trimmed it back. 

Four goals in total for the second quarter got the Pies right back in the contest, with strong ball use and hard running igniting the young side. 

Southport came out strong in the third term, kicking three of the first four goals, however two quick ones from Joe Richards and another from the VFL-listed Jonathan Tomasiello kept the Pies in it.

It wasn't to be however as the home side held strong in the final term to run out winners. 

Farrant flys for fantastic grab

Playing in just his second game at VFL level, exciting forward Patrick Farrant flew high for a fantastic mark in the early stages of the game on Saturday. Known for his exceptional kicking skills and ability to jump over the pack, Farrant used a one-one-one opportunity to leap up over his opponent and take a brilliant grab, before calming slotting the set shot to get some momentum rolling for his side. 

Reef runs all over the ground 

Playing in his second game for the season, AFL-listed forward Reef McInnes was fantastic against Southport on Saturday, with his hard running and ball skills a feature of his game. The 21-year-old opened the Pies' account with a set shot in the first term, before setting up many opportunities for his teammates throughout the second and running hard along the flanks. He handed a certain goal over to teammates Josh Carmichael to start the third term and found himself involved in the majority of the Pies' scoring opportunities. McInnes finished with two goals and 13 disposals in a fantastic outing. 

Richards dazzles with consecutive goals

Coming into the match second equal on the league leading goal-kickers' table, small forward Joe Richards sparked up in the third term with consecutive goals. The first, being a simple set shot that the second-year Pie would rarely miss took him to 12 for the season, before he added another at the very next centre bounce when he took a advantage with aplomb and finished on the run. 

Macrae makes hay in the middle

As has become customary, 21-year-old midfielder Finlay Macrae played a crucial role through the centre of the ground on Saturday, dominating at clearance in his 41st VFL match. Leading a midfield that lost Lachie Sullivan to AFL elevation and VFL-listed star Ned Long, Macrae ran all day and was a clear contributor to the Pies' scoring chances. Finishing with 18 disposals and six clearances as of stats recorded at the immediate end of the game, Macrae had another solid day. 

The Pies will take on the Northern Bullants next Saturday in Round Seven.
