'Oh dear': Giant cops monster ban after 'nasty hit' on Swans star

Giants forward Callum Brown has copped a three-game suspension for a high bump on Sydney star Tom McCartin.

The AFL has sent a clear message in 2024 that contact to the head won't be tolerated, with a number of players handed heavy suspensions over head-high bumps, including St Kilda's Jimmy Webster (seven weeks) and Port's Sam Powell-Pepper (four).

Now 23-year-old Brown has become the latest offered a heavy suspension after the move that forced the Swan out of the game.

It occurred early in the second quarter, after Harry Himmelberg kicked the ball long out of defence.

It bounced in front of McCartin on the wing, who accelerated towards it only to be met high by Brown coming from his left.

"Oh dear," David King said in commentary as soon as the hit happened.

"That's a nasty hit," Alastair Lynch added.

When a replay of the incident was played, King added: "No, that's no good. You can't brace like that and make that sort of contact anymore.

"He chooses to bump, at the end he chooses to bump.

"I know he's coming at speed and he's got some decisions to make, but the one outcome that he must prevent is contact with the head."

McCartin, who just like his retired brother Paddy has a history of concussion issues, was left flat on the turf and suffered a cut under his left eye.

He was soon substituted out of the game after failing a Head Injury Assessment (HIA), indicating the affect the shot had on the defender.

There was a quick fallout on social media from people watching on after the hit.

"Callum Brown probably in a bit of trouble for that. Shoulder got McCartin's head and McCartin came straight from the ground. Going down to the rooms," journalist Lachlan McKirdy wrote on X.

"Callum brown will probably get 4 weeks for that," was another comment.

"He's in trouble," wrote another.

"Enjoy the holiday!! But who knows with the tribunal," suggested a fourth.
