DANE COUNTY (WQOW) - The Department of Health Services confirmed a case of measles in an adult in Dane County.

While there have been 125 confirmed cases nationally this year, this is the first case in Wisconsin since one case was found in Milwaukee in fall 2023.

The DHS is still gathering more information about this case, including where they traveled to and what their vaccination status is. They are identifying contacts who were exposed between 10 and 12 days. However, symptoms sometimes don't show until 21 days after contact.

Symptoms to look out for include a fever, pink eye, and a rash starting at the hairline and making its way down the body. After the rash is first noticed, there is a four-day contagion period.

Many cases are from unvaccinated people traveling overseas where measles is common. Around 83% of the cases this year have been from people who are not vaccinated or where the status is unknown.

To learn more about this case, visit the DHS website. Or, to check your vaccination status, visit the Wisconsin Immunization Registry. We will keep you updated as we learn more information.
