Game 1 goes to Boston.

The Bruins beat the Florida Panthers 5-1 in Game 1 of their second-round Stanley Cup Playoffs series on Monday at Sunrise's Amerant Bank Arena.

Matthew Tkachuk gave Florida a 1-0 lead 11:45 into the second period before Boston began its onslaught.

Morgan Geekie, Mason Lohrei and Brandon Carlo all scored in a span of 6:47 to give Boston a 3-1 lead after the second period. Justin Brazeau tacked on another goal in the third on a breakaway that beat Sergei Bobrovsky, who stopped 23 of 27 shots faced, and Jake DeBrusk capped scoring with an empty-net goal.

Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman, meanwhile, was stellar. He made 38 saves, including stopping all 16 Panthers shots that came his way in the third period.

Game 2 of the best-of-7 series is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Sunrise.

Bruins keep extending their lead

Boston took a commanding 4-1 led with 12:47 left in regulation on a Justin Brazeau shot off a breakaway.

Boston closes out the second with another goal

The Bruins closed out the second period with a third goal, this time from Brandon Carlo, with 20.6 seconds left on the clock.

To recap: Boston had just seven shots on goal in the second period. Three went in. Florida had 15 shots on goal in the frame and only got the Tkachuk goal before the Bruins began scoring in bunches.

Florida is down 3-1 with 20 minutes left in regulation.

And now the Bruins take the lead

Boston went up 2-1 late in the second period, with defenseman Mason Lohrei going top shelf to beat Sergei Bobrovksy shortly after a failed Panthers power play opportunity.

Bruins quickly tie it up

Just over a minute after Matthew Tkachuk's goal, the Bruins' Morgan Geekie tied the game by sending a rebound past a flailing Sergei Bobrovsky.

1-1, 7:08 left in the second.

Tkachuk gets Florida Panthers on the board first

Matthew Tkachuk opened scoring 11:45 into the second period with a wrist shot from the slot that got past Jeremy Swayman.

It's Tkachuk's fourth goal and 10th point of the 2024 playoffs.

Aleksander Barkov got the primary assist.

May the best goaltender win

If nothing else has come out of the first half of this game, it's that we're likely primed for a stellar goaltending battle.

Sergei Bobrovsky is a perfect 17 for 17 so far. Jeremy Swayman is 18 for 18. Both have made their share of big saves already.

The first to blink very well might be the one to lose.

First period thoughts

The Panthers and Bruins are scoreless after 20 minutes, and Boston really picked things up over the final half of the first period.

The Bruins have a 13-9 edge in shots on goal, have blocked eight Panthers shots and have a 29-18 edge in hits.

Boston has about a minute left on a power play when the second period begins.

In net, Sergei Bobrovsky has already stopped six high-danger shots per the advanced hockey statistics website Natural Stat Trick. Boston's Jeremy Swayman has turned aside both high-danger shots he has faced.

Panthers come out aggressive

No score through the first six-and-a-half minutes, but the Panthers have dominated on the ice through the early minutes. The forecheck has been strong, and Florida is spending a good amount of time in the offensive zone.

Shots on goal are 5-1 in favor of Florida.

In particular, the Anton Lundell line (with Eetu Luostarinen and Sam Reinhart on the wing) has been noticeable.
