A candy recall was issued this week in 17 different states over concerns that the products may be contaminated with salmonella.

On Monday, KCAU-TV in Sioux City, Iowa, reported that the Palmer Candy Company announced a recall for several different "White Coated Confectionary Items," due to the risk of salmonella.

The Palmer Candy company was notified by a supplier that the liquid used to coat items in confection may be contaminated with salmonella and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently investigating, KCAU-TV reported.

According to the local news outlet, the recalled items were sold at Walmart, Hy-Vee, Target and Dollar General stores in 17 states including California, Florida, Alabama, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, North Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, Oregon, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Virginia, Wisconsin, Texas and Wyoming.

Newsweek reached out to Palmer Candy via its website for more information. Newsweek also reached out to the FDA via email for comment.

According to the FDA, salmonella is a bacteria "that can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever called salmonellosis."

"Salmonella can be spread by food handlers who do not wash their hands and/or the surfaces and tools they use between food preparation steps, and when people eat raw or undercooked foods. Salmonella can also spread from animals to people," the FDA states.

The FDA states that individuals infected with salmonella typically experience symptoms within 12 to 72 hours following the initial infection. Salmonellosis, the illness caused by salmonella infection, could last several days, the FDA states.

"Most people with salmonellosis develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. More severe cases of salmonellosis may include a high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, a rash, blood in the urine or stool, and in some cases may become fatal," the FDA states. "The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that approximately 450 persons in the United States die each year from acute salmonellosis."

Individuals with weakened immune systems and children below the age of 5 are more likely to experience "severe salmonellosis infections," according to the FDA.

Earlier this month, the FDA issued a similar recall from Apple Valley, Minnesota's Abdallah Candies for a small quantity of the company's "sea salt almond alligators." The recall was prompted because the products were mislabeled as "chocolate covered cherries" and marked with the code "0315" on the bottom of the box.

Due to the mislabeling, the affected boxes contain the undeclared ingredient almonds, which could cause the sometimes fatal condition anaphylaxis in those with tree nut allergies.
