Strong earthquake strikes near Mexico-Guatemala border

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck early Sunday near the Mexico-Guatemala border, causing what appears to be limited damage.

The earthquake was recorded just before 6 a.m. local time, the USGS said, adding that it had a depth of 46.6 miles and its epicenter was several miles off the Pacific Coast. There have not been any reports of deaths or injuries as of Sunday afternoon.

The Mexican National Civil Protection System said in a statement that it was monitoring the situation and that there have not been reports of major damage, Reuters reported.

In Guatemala, early reports of structural damage were concentrated in Quetzaltenango and San Marcos, communities close to the Mexico border. Guatemala's disaster agency, Conred, posted photos on X of a small landslide blocking a road as well as several homes with structural cracks that officials say were caused by the quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey records about 20,000 temblors every year, about 55 per day, though most are small and are relatively unnoticed.
